Software download is regarded as a fundamental requirement for reconfigurable terminals. Three major types of reconfiguration software may be downloaded to a mobile terminal. 'Noblet' classifies these as ‘end user applications’, ‘protocol stack and management
modules’, and ‘signal processing algorithms and air interface parameters’, whereby the size
of downloadable software modules may even reach the Mbyte range. The access scheme
proposal of 'Noblet' incorporates a ‘bootstrap channel’ (consisting of both a signaling and download
subchannel), and also a so-called ‘pilot channel’ of small bandwidth and with the task of
pointing to a download channel within the currently visited access network, i.e. this pilot channel constitutes a ‘small bandwidth information channel’ which may be implemented as a
global broadcast channel transmitting information about local bootstrap channels. see the figure
